Akdeniz Village: A Hidden Gem of Nature and History in Girne, Northern Cyprus

Located in the Kyrenia (Girne) region of Northern Cyprus, Akdeniz Village is a charming settlement known for its rich history, unspoiled natural beauty, and ecological significance. Originally called Ayia Irini, this village is nestled near the shores of the Morphou Bay (Güzelyurt Körfezi) and offers a perfect blend of cultural heritage and scenic landscapes. Akdeniz Village has deep historical roots, with its former Greek name “Ayia Irini” linked to the legend of Saint Irene, a nun believed to have lived in the area. The village was renamed Akdeniz (Mediterranean) in 1975, inspired by its proximity to the sea and surrounding forests. One of the most remarkable archaeological discoveries in Cyprus was made near Akdeniz in 1929. Swedish archaeologists unearthed nearly 2,000 ancient statues and figurines dating back to 750-500 BC at a site known as Paleokastro, located on a seaside hill. While many of these artifacts were taken to Sweden, some remain on display at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia (Lefkoşa). Akdeniz Village is one of the most ecologically significant areas in Cyprus. It is part of the Natura 2000 Conservation Project, ensuring the protection of its pristine landscapes. The 6-kilometer-long coastline of Akdeniz is one of the longest nesting beaches for loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta Caretta) and green turtles, making it a key site for conservation efforts led by biologists and volunteers. The village is also home to diverse flora and fauna. The surrounding forests and fields are rich in wild mushrooms, asparagus (Ayrelli), and endemic flowers such as the Medoş Tulip (Tulipa Cypria). Olive and carob (harnup) trees are abundant, contributing to the local agricultural economy. The residents of Akdeniz primarily engage in agriculture and livestock farming. The village is known for its wheat production, fresh vegetables, and especially its delicious watermelons. Dairy farming is also prominent, with traditional halloumi (hellim) cheese being a significant local product.Situated approximately 38 km west of Girne, Akdeniz Village is surrounded by several other charming settlements. To the north, it neighbors Koruçam (Kormacit) and Sadrazamköy (Livera), while Tepebaşı (Yorgoz) and Karpaşa (Karpasia) lie to the east. To the southeast, it connects with Kalkanlı (Kapouti – Kalo Chorio) and Yayla (Syrianochori) in the Güzelyurt district. Despite its peaceful and remote atmosphere, Akdeniz is easily accessible via main road networks, allowing residents and visitors to reach Girne, Lefkoşa (Nicosia), and the western coastline with ease. Akdeniz Village is a hidden treasure in Northern Cyprus, offering a unique combination of history, nature, and cultural heritage. With its pristine beaches, ancient archaeological sites, and thriving agricultural traditions, it is an ideal destination for eco-tourism, history enthusiasts, and those seeking a peaceful countryside retreat.
